Needle Gauge

Needle gauge is a measure of needle thickness; higher gauge numbers indicate thinner needles. Research peptide subcutaneous injections typically use 27G–31G needles; intramuscular injections use 21G–25G.

Overview

Needle gauge follows an inverse relationship with diameter: a 31G needle is thinner than a 27G needle. Thinner needles cause less tissue trauma and pain but have slower flow rates and are more prone to bending. For subcutaneous peptide injection, 27G–31G short needles (4–8 mm) are standard — they are fine enough to minimize discomfort while still flowing the small volumes (typically 0.05–0.2 mL) used in research protocols. Intramuscular injections require longer needles (1–1.5 inches) with slightly larger gauges (21G–25G) to penetrate the subcutaneous layer and reach muscle. Syringe and needle are often sold as one integrated unit for insulin syringes.
