Oral Peptide
An oral peptide is a peptide administered by mouth. Most peptides degrade rapidly in the digestive tract, yielding very low bioavailability; BPC-157 is a notable exception with documented oral activity in animal studies.
Overview
The oral route is the most convenient method of drug administration, but it presents major challenges for peptides. Proteolytic enzymes in the stomach (pepsin) and small intestine (trypsin, chymotrypsin) break peptide bonds rapidly, degrading most compounds before significant absorption occurs. The intestinal epithelium also presents a size-selective absorption barrier that most peptides cannot cross intact. BPC-157 research stands out because animal studies have reported effects even with oral and gavage administration, suggesting partial resistance to gastric degradation. Pharmaceutical companies have addressed oral peptide delivery by using chemical modifications, absorption enhancers (as in oral Semaglutide/Rybelsus), or novel formulation technologies.
