In vivo refers to research conducted in a living organism, either animal or human. In vivo studies are more directly translatable than in vitro studies because they account for pharmacokinetics and whole-system biology.

The term 'in vivo' is Latin for 'within the living.' In vivo peptide research typically involves administering a compound to a living animal model under controlled conditions and measuring biological outcomes over time. This allows researchers to observe pharmacokinetics (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion), whole-organism toxicity, and complex systemic effects that cannot be replicated in cell culture. Rodent in vivo studies represent the majority of peptide preclinical research. Human in vivo studies (clinical trials) are the highest level of evidence. The step from animal in vivo to human in vivo still involves significant uncertainty because of species differences, but animal in vivo data is considerably more informative than in vitro data alone.
